Sierra Service Project
Sierra Service Project (SSP) was founded in 1975 by two young United Methodist pastors and was originally part of the Appalachia Service Project. For most of its history, SSP's week-long service projects have taken place on Native American reservations in the Western United States. SSP invites young people to experience the life changing power of Christ's spirit through acts of service repairing homes.
In 2009, St. Mark's took 22 youth and 6 adults to Navajo Nation in Tsaile, Arizona. We were housed in the student dorms at the Dine College and performed work projects in the two nearby chapters, Lukachukai and Tsaile-Wheatfields. Tsaile, Arizona is located at the edge of the Canyon de Chelly National Monument.
In 2010, St. Mark's will send two teams of Sr. High youth to Klamath, CA to work at homes on the Yurok Reservation. In addition to our two Sr. High teams, a small Jr. High team will spend a week in Indian Valley, working with the Roundhouse Council, an organization that provides a variety of services to both native and non-natives living in the community.
