Get the Word out:  Creating Beloved Community
SUNDAY, August 25 at 10:00AM

Sunday is the final worship service in the Get the Word Out series. The theme is Creating Beloved Community

Part of the strategy for building a movement is to provide a community for training and support. If other people are to become active in the movement, they need help in developing skills and sensitivities that will enable them to engage the community in constructive ways. This work needs special skills and it needs a heart and soul attuned to the needs and struggles of other people.

Martin Luther King talked about The Beloved Community… a description of the church at its best where people find comfort and solace as well as challenge information about how to build a different kind of world.

Sunday’s scripture is set in the final meal Jesus shared with his disciples right before his death. He washed the disciples feet…leading by example in training his followers into service and humility. Then he gave his one great commandment – to love one another. Loving each other demands change and a willingness to risk. Loving sounds simple but it is not easy.

John 13:2-5, 34-35 (Common English Bible)

Jesus and his disciples were sharing the evening meal. The devil had already provoked Judas, Simon Iscariot’s son, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew the Father had given everything into his hands and that he had come from God and was returning to God. So he got up from the table and took off his robes. Picking up a linen towel, he tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a washbasin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he was wearing.
