St. Mark’s Reconciling Ministries emphasize growth in faith and love of God to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex community. As part of the United Methodist Reconciling Ministries Network (www.rmnetwork.org), St. Mark’s is active in welcoming and challenging the GLBTI community to seek God, share their spiritual journey with others, grow in faith and celebrate the gifts that are the sexual orientation and gender identity that God bestows on each individual.
Serving as an entry point into St. Mark’s, this ministry group seeks to integrate the GLBTI community into the various programs and activities that are at the heart of the life and ministry of the St. Mark’s church.
The activities and ministries of this group include:
Monthly Potlucks: on the second Sunday of each month; sponsored by the GLBTI ministry group but open to everyone; after the 11:00am / contemporary service (around 12:30pm); no food assignments – a true potluck in the sense of the word; featuring learning activities and special speakers from time to time
Holiday Celebrations: at Christmas, Easter and other festive occasions
Summer Brunch Series Support: meal preparation and food service on select Sundays during the summer months to encourage and celebrate church-wide interaction
Sacramento Pride Support: a coordinated parade contingent and a booth exhibitor in the festival that follows
HIV/AIDS Run/Walk Support: coordination of a parade contingent to promote faith and healing
Monday Night Bible Study: exploring God’s word for everyday application
Winter Shelter Program Support: preparation of meals and delivery of on-campus hospitality services for Sacramento’s homeless population
GLBTI Film Festival: showcase of films and documentaries that address faith and “gay” issues
St. Mark’s Reconciling Ministries is sponsoring a fundraiser for the Sacramento LGBT Community Center which just opened their first transitional house for 24-hour support of homeless LGBTQ youth. This new program is funded by special federal and local grants, but the Center is in need of the necessary items to make this house a “home” for up to 8 youth (ages 18-24) for up to two years! These youth will receive job services, counseling, help with school applications, and general case management assistance all centered around youth-identified goals.
According to the center, “40% of homeless youth identify as LGBT”.
St. Mark’s Reconciling Ministries (R.M.) Team has been asked to provide gift cards from Target to enable the Center to obtain the items to support these youth. This fund raiser will run from Sunday, February 25 through April 1 (Easter Sunday). During this time, you can help by:
Bringing a Target gift card on Sundays and place it in the box on the table in the Lobby
Writing a check payable to the Sacramento LGBT Community Center and putting it in the box on the table in the Lobby
Placing cash/check in a pew donation envelope clearly marked for “St. Mark’s Reconciling Ministries/Sac LGBT Youth Ministries” in the subject line
The Target cards will be used by the Youth Center to purchase things such as:
Linens and bedding items
Disposal cleaning supplies
Hygiene Supplies, etc.
St. Mark’s R. M. Team will deliver the cards to the Center after Easter. Ending homelessness and support of the LGBT community are two of St. Mark’s core ministries. This fundraiser allows us to support both of these ministries at the same time! Visit www.saclgbtcenter.org for more information.
GLBTI and straight alliance members from St. Mark’s participate in Sacramento’s annual Pride celebration, both at the parade and festival. Church leaders the membership are committed to demonstrate to the GLBTI and Sacramento communities that St. Mark’s is an open and welcoming Christian community for ALL people.
