An Open Letter re: Marriage Equality
“Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” The voters of California added that sentence, Proposition 8, to the California Constitution on November 4, 2008, by a small majority. More than 80 percent of those who attend church every week voted in favor, and more than 80 percent of those who never attend church voted against. This was the first issue in my 61 years that got me out knocking on my neighbors’ doors and asking for their votes. I believe this presents an opportunity to expand the family of God in California.
Education and employment have carried me to 8 cities in 8 different States, from Texas and West Virginia to Hawaii and now California. I have been a Methodist church member or in regular attendance in each. I found strong scriptural reasons to vote against Proposition 8.
The meditation that accompanies this letter offers you the reasons for my decision. I hope you will read them. It’s longer than a sound bite, because none of us reached our present faith from a single sound bite. Whether you agree with me or not, please continue to study the Scriptures, pray, consult those whom you trust, and preach as God continues to guide you. God bless you.
Yours in Christ,
